You’ve been diagnosed with PCOD. Your periods are irregular, your hormones feel out of balance, and now you’re worried –  can I even get pregnant?

It’s a question we hear every single day at Renu IVF.

And here is the honest answer: Yes, you can. But you need to understand what is happening in your body  and follow the right treatment path.

Why Does PCOD Cause Infertility?

PCOD is a hormonal condition. In a normal cycle, your body releases one mature egg every month. But in PCOD, this process gets disrupted.

Here is what happens inside:

  • LH hormone rises — Luteinizing Hormone, which triggers ovulation, becomes elevated.
  • FSH hormone falls — Follicle Stimulating Hormone, which helps the egg mature properly, goes down.
  • Ovulation stops — Without the right hormonal balance, the egg forms but does not release.

No egg. No pregnancy. It is that simple.

This is called an ovulation  and it is the number one reason why women with PCOD struggle to conceive. In fact, while infertility affects about 15% of women in the general population, it affects up to 50% of women with PCOD.

But here is the important part: understanding the problem is the first step to solving it.

As Dr. Renu Singh Gahlaut explains in this video, PCOD infertility is treatable  with patience, the right guidance, and a step-by-step approach. Watch here:

Does PCOD Infertility Always Need IVF?

No  and this is something many women do not realise.

IVF is not always the first step. At Renu IVF, we always start with the least invasive option and move forward only if needed.

Here is how the treatment journey typically works:

The PCOD Infertility Treatment Path — Step by Step

Step 1: Weight Loss First — It Changes Everything

If you are overweight , losing just 10% of your current body weight can begin to restore hormonal balance on its own.

That means:

  • If you weigh 80 kg, losing just 8 kg can make a real difference
  • If you weigh 70 kg, target losing around 7 kg

This is not about crash dieting. Starving yourself for two weeks will not work  your body will rebound. The goal is slow, steady weight loss over 3 to 4 months through a combination of diet and exercise.

At Renu IVF, we guide patients through exactly what to eat  breakfast, lunch, dinner so that weight loss is sustainable, not stressful.

Why does this matter? Because weight loss at the level of RNA and DNA actually improves how PCOD affects your body. It is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Step 2: Correct the Hormonal Imbalance with Supplements

PCOD patients often have years of elevated insulin and androgens in their system. This directly harms egg quality even when there are many eggs visible on the scan.

This is why, alongside weight loss, we prescribe targeted supplements such as:

  • CoQ10 — improves mitochondrial function in eggs
  • Resveratrol — a natural antioxidant that supports egg quality
  • Folic Acid — essential for cell division and early embryo development
  • Ecosprin (low-dose aspirin) — improves blood flow to the uterus

These are not just generic vitamins. Each one targets a specific mechanism in PCOD that affects your fertility.

Step 3: Follicular Monitoring — Timed to Your Ovulation

Once your hormones are better balanced, we track your cycle using ultrasound.

This is called follicular monitoring. We scan you regularly to watch your follicle (the sac containing the egg) grow. On the day the egg is ready to release, we guide you on the exact timing to try naturally.

We repeat this for 3 to 4 cycles. Many women conceive at this stage no IVF needed.

Step 4: IUI — If Natural Timing Doesn’t Work

If timed intercourse does not result in a pregnancy, the next step is IUI (Intrauterine Insemination).

Here, your husband’s sperm is collected, processed in the lab to select the best, most motile sperm, and then placed directly into your uterus at the time of ovulation.

This increases your chances of conception by 15 to 20% compared to trying naturally and it is a simple, non-surgical procedure.

Step 5: IVF — The Most Powerful Option

If IUI also does not succeed, IVF is an excellent option for PCOD patients.

Here is what happens:

  1. Eggs are stimulated to grow using carefully monitored hormone injections
  2. Mature eggs are collected from your ovaries
  3. Each egg is fertilised with your husband’s sperm in the lab
  4. The best quality embryo  Day 3 or Day 5 blastocyst is selected
  5. The embryo is transferred into your uterus

One important note for PCOD patients: because insulin and androgen levels have been elevated for a long time, egg quality can be lower than expected. This is why the supplements and hormonal correction before IVF are so important. At Renu IVF, we prepare PCOD patients carefully before starting IVF to maximise your chances of getting a good quality embryo.

What Should You Eat to Improve Egg Quality?

Diet plays a bigger role in PCOD infertility than most people realise. The antioxidants found in colourful fruits and vegetables work at the level of the mitochondria inside you reggs  literally improving their quality from the inside.

Eat more of:

  • All green vegetables  especially seasonal ones
  • Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables (the colour is the antioxidant)
  • Whole grains and lean proteins

Important: Do not overcook your vegetables until all colour is gone. The colour is where the antioxidants live. Lightly cooked or raw vegetables preserve the most benefit.

Think of it this way your grandmother always said certain foods help you conceive and have healthy children. Modern science now confirms why: it is the antioxidants in those colourful, natural foods that are protecting and improving your egg quality.

A Word of Reassurance

Yes, PCOD causes infertility in 50% of cases. That number sounds frightening.

But here is the good news: almost all PCOD patients who follow treatment patiently and consistently do conceive.

The journey may take time. It may require moving from follicular monitoring to IUI to IVF. But with the right infertility specialist, the right diet, the right supplements, and the right mindset pregnancy is absolutely possible.

At Renu IVF, Kanpur, Dr. Renu Singh Gahlaut and her team have helped hundreds of PCOD patients become mothers. Every treatment plan is personalised because every woman’s body, hormonal profile, and fertility situation is different.
